Al “Gore’s” The Truth Yet Again

While giving a speech in Saudi Arabia, Al Gore once again assailed the Bush administration, this time for our treatment of Arabs since 9/11.

Gore said Arabs had been “indiscriminately rounded up” and held in “unforgivable” conditions. The former vice president said the Bush administration was playing into al-Qaida’s hands by routinely blocking Saudi visa applications.

“The thoughtless way in which visas are now handled, that is a mistake,” Gore said during the Jiddah Economic Forum. “The worst thing we can possibly do is to cut off the channels of friendship and mutual understanding between Saudi Arabia and the United States.”

Gore told the largely Saudi audience, many of them educated at U.S. universities, that Arabs in the United States had been “indiscriminately rounded up, often on minor charges of overstaying a visa or not having a green card in proper order, and held in conditions that were just unforgivable.”

“Unfortunately there have been terrible abuses and it’s wrong,” Gore said. “I do want you to know that it does not represent the desires or wishes or feelings of the majority of the citizens of my country.”

First things first. I want Gore to come up with some proof of these “unforgivable conditions”. Second, what Gore calls “minor charges of overstaying a visa or not having a green card in proper order”, other people call violating immigration laws. Quite simply, those that overstay visas and don’t have their green cards in order are criminals violating the laws of this country. And when 15 of the 19 hijackers come from Saudi Arabia (some of whom if I recall, were in violation of immigration laws), can the Bush administration really be faulted for actually enforcing the immigration law (something they should be doing more often, even today).

Next, Gore’s claim that visa’s are handled “thoughtlessly” shows he’s totally cut off from reality. In case he forgot, only Saudi Arabian citizens can go through what’s called “Visa Express” (exposed by National Review’s Joel Mowbray), a program which allows travel agents, who are not US citizens, to issue visas, after reviewing only a 2 page document and a photo. Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world with such a visa program. It was this “Visa Express” program that allowed three of the 9/11 hijackers to enter the US.

I’ve often said that one area in which Democrats could get to the President’s “right” on national security was on Saudi Arabia, who the current administration, as well as past administrations, have treated as a friend, when in fact they are the opposite. Only Al Gore, in the alternative universe he lives in, could imagine that a majority of Americans think it’s a mistake to be more strict with the Saudis and the attempts of its citizens to enter the country.
